8x8 Armored Rescue Vehicle

Problem / Brief

A second-year collaboration between Coventry University and Rheinmetall AG, working to weekly feedback from Rheinmetall's own design team throughout. The brief was to design a rescue vehicle capable of operating in arctic conditions, built on the package of the Rheinmetall Boxer, an 8x8 wheeled armoured platform already proven in extreme environments.

Research

Arctic operation set the terms for almost every decision: sustained sub-zero temperatures, low-grip terrain, and long periods of reduced visibility all had to be designed for directly rather than treated as edge cases. Alongside the environmental brief, accessibility for crew and casualties in full cold-weather equipment shaped the packaging, and the vehicle's visual presence was treated as a genuine design requirement, not a styling afterthought, a rescue vehicle has to read as capable and trustworthy at a glance in an environment where that first impression matters.

Iterations

Development ran on a weekly feedback cycle with Rheinmetall AG's design team, testing surfacing and packaging decisions against the Boxer's real 8x8 platform constraints at each stage rather than resolving the design in isolation and presenting it at the end. Iterations worked through how much of the Boxer's own architecture to keep legible versus how far the surfacing could depart from it while staying credible as a build on that package.

Outcome

The result is a rescue variant that reads clearly as part of the Boxer family while being purpose-built for arctic search and rescue, resolving cold-weather accessibility, crew needs, and a deliberately confident visual presence into a single package rather than treating them as competing priorities.
